Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is a Dublin-based medical institution, situated on St. Stephen's Green. The college is one of the five Recognised Colleges of the National University of Ireland.

RCSI has been at the forefront of educating healthcare professionals since 1784. As a health-focused institution, they educate undergraduate Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy students and postgraduate research students across the spectrum of translational health research topics. Based in the heart of Dublin city centre, with four overseas campuses, RCSI is dedicated to the development of healthcare leaders who make a difference worldwide.

It is now Ireland's largest medical school with over 3000 students from 60 countries. The RCSI is a sister institute of the Royal Surgical Colleges of the United Kingdom (London, Glasgow and Edinburgh).

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland is independent, international and progressive.

RCSI is the professional training body for Surgery in Ireland. Today, under statutory authority, it manages postgraduate residency training, memberships and fellowships and continuous professional development through its Department of Surgical Affairs, Faculties of Radiologists, Dentistry, Sports & Exercise Medicine and Nursing & Midwifery. RCSI also operates the Irish Institute of Pharmacy on behalf of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.

The RCSI Research Institute is one of Ireland’s foremost research centres. RCSI is committed to performing high levels of research activity, to commercialising intellectual property arising from its research, and to developing collaborative links with industry, educational and research institutions both nationally and internationally.

RCSI students benefit from early contact with patients in a hospital setting and the College offers excellent support to students on their journey to becoming a healthcare professional with small class sizes, tutorials and one-to-one teaching.

The College enjoys a vibrant combination of nationalities and cultures where students from around the world exchange ideas and learn from one another. More than 60 nationalities are represented on the RCSI student body and students enjoy the full ‘RCSI Experience’, which extends beyond the curriculum to a rich tapestry of student clubs and societies that equip them for a life of leadership and civic participation.

Applicants (whose first language is not English) must  meet the minimum English language.

IELTS examination (academic stream) with an overall average score of 6.5 with no individual section lower than 6.0.

Note: All IELTS test results must be less than 2 years old at the time of admission.

Students must have completed the subjects Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at standard XII, and hold a bone-fide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE. Students must have an average score of 80% with not less than 75% in any individual subject. Candidates achieving 95% of above can be considered for the 5 year programme

The Graduate of Medicine( GEM ) programme is designed for students who hold (or expect to hold by July prior to entry) a competitive GPA or a minimum of an upper second class honours from an accredited undergraduate bachelor degree (equivalent to NFQ Level 8). A science background is not a prerequisite and academic excellence in the humanities or social sciences is recognized.


Candidates must also present EITHER a competitive Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) OR a Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) score.

 Please note that MCAT and GAMSAT results for students applying to Non EU GEM are valid for 5 years prior to the start of the programme.

As a guide, the minimum scores on which students were admitted in 2017 were MCAT: 501 (26) and GAMSAT: 58

One of the most important tasks faced by new students is the search for suitable accommodation. RCSI offers a number of services to assist students with finding the perfect home away from home.

On- Campus Accommodation

• The RCSI on-campus accommodation is known as Mercer Court and there are two accommodation options available in Mercer Court.

• Millin House (Consists of 23 single and 5 twin rooms. All rooms are en-suite.)

 • Mercer Apartments (Comprises 19 self catering apartments. There are 68 single and 4 twin bedrooms all of which are en-suite.)

• Both of which are conveniently located beside the RCSI Library (The Mercer Library) and within a two minute walk from the main College campus. Mercer Accommodation is also at the heart of Dublin and is surrounded by shops, cafés, restaurants, etc..


RCSI also recommends the Aungier Street Student Accommodation.

Aungier Street Student Residence is an outstanding state of the art complex with 26 bedrooms, located in the heart of Dublin City and is an ideal location for all students attending RCSI. Aungier Street Student Residence is located within 3 minutes walking distance to the college, and 2 minutes to The Mercer Library.

 RCSI students have been residing here for over 10 years.

The accommodation message board provides a host of listings for private rented accommodation - from one-bed apartments to host family accommodation.

Undergraduate fees for school of medicine for the academic year 2018/19 are €55,500. An additional one off payment on first year fee of €135 applies for registration with the National University of Ireland (NUI). Postgraduate fee vary.Fees vary from course to course.


Recent estimates for the cost of living in Dublin have ranged between €8,000 and €12,100, largely depending on the type of accommodation chosen, including rent, electricity, food, books and laundry and medicine as well as travel passes and social expenses, but excluding tuition fees.
