The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), formerly known as Galway Regional Technical College was set up in 1972.

The Institute is one of the largest in the country and is located on the western seaboard in the historic city of Galway. Spread across five campuses - two in Galway city (Galway Campus and Centre for Creative Arts & Media), two in County Galway (Letterfrack and Mountbellew) and one in County Mayo (Mayo Campus)

The institution offers a range of Higher Certificates, Degrees, Honours Degrees and Post Grads, in a range of disciplines and places a strong emphasis on developing practical and transferable skills in the graduates, in order to improve their employability and career prospects.

GMIT offers courses in Engineering, Computing, Business, Science, Tourism, Nursing, Outdoor Education, Creative Arts, Furniture, and more.

 Applicants must have completed their secondary school (High School) education to a standard comparable to the Irish Leaving Certificate (European Qualifications Framework (EQF) Level 4)

All incoming students should make accommodation arrangements before arriving to study in GMIT.

Private Rented Accommodation:

The online accommodation listings service provided by GMIT Students Union website provides a list of the different types of accommodation (houses, flats, full and partial board) available near the Galway, Mayo, Letterfrack and Mountbellew campuses.

Additionally, guidelines on rental arrangements are published in the Students’ Guide and Welfare Booklet issued by GMIT Students’ Union. Information on Tenant Rights is also available online on the GMIT Students Union website.

Student Villages:

A number of purpose-built student villages are located near GMIT Galway and Mayo campuses.These student villages are owned and run by private operators.

Please note that the accommodation is privately owned, and is not vetted or approved by GMIT or GMIT Students Union.

New international students are strongly encouraged to book accommodation with an approved student village for their first semester in GMIT.  Student Villages offer purpose built student accommodation of a high quality with broadband access and ancillary services.

Other accommodation options are available in each location, ranging from apartments to houses.

The Student Union Office provides a comprehensive list of suitable accommodation available to International students. Students can contact or visit the Student’s Union website for available accommodation. Other sources of information about accommodation are the local newspapers- the Galway Advertiser and the Galway Independent.

GMIT Non-EU Student Scholarships

Scholarships are available for Non-EU students, as a bursary to the value of up to 30% of non-EU fees.

If you are a Non-EU student thinking of applying to study in GMIT then you may qualify for a GMIT scholarship in recognition of your English language attainment, your country of origin, or both.  These bursaries are reviewed annually.

1. English Language Attainment Scholarships

Undergraduate &  Postgraduate with  6.5 or higher  IELTS   eligible for brusary to the value upto  15% of non-EU fees.

2. Country of Origin Scholarships

Indian students are eligible for a bursary to the value of up to 15% of non-EU fees.

3. Continuation of scholarships

Once you have been awarded one or both of these scholarships, you can continue to avail of these bursaries during your time at GMIT, subject to the following condition:

You will be awarded your scholarship(s) every year provided that you successfully progress in your programme of study with at least a 55% average in yearly examinations.  If you are repeat attending or repeating examinations only, you will not qualify for scholarships for that academic year. Once you successfully complete your repeat year, you can qualify for the scholarship again in subsequent years, once your average is over 55%.

If you progress from a GMIT undergraduate programme to a GMIT postgraduate programme, you will automatically qualify for a scholarship to the value of 30% off the quoted fee for that postgraduate programme.


The International Engagement Office at GMIT is very pleased to announce that the Institute has been awarded a limited number of Government of Ireland International scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate admission .

Scholarships have been allocated for students from the USA, China, India and Brazil who are already in receipt of an offer letter from GMIT

The Scholarships include a full tuition fee waiver (provided by GMIT) and a stipend of €10,000 (provided by the HEA) to cover living expenses for one year.
