The Singapore Management University ( SMU) is an autonomous university in Singapore that specialises in business and management studies. The university provides an American-style education modelled by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

SMU was established on 12 January 2000 and is located in the downtown area of Singapore. It has a total enrollment of about 8,800 undergraduate and postgraduate students and comprises six Schools offering undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programmes in Business Administration, Business Analytics, Financial Services, Accountancy, Economics, Information Systems Management, Law and the Social Sciences. The University has over 30 research institutes and centres of excellence, and customised corporate training and lifelong learning for individuals are available through the university’s professional and executive development programmes.

SMU was designed to provide a different model of university education in Singapore known for  interactive pedagogy of seminar-style teaching and an innovative broad-based curriculum. SMU has attracted top academics from diverse backgrounds around the world to shape and build a dynamic university.

Minimum Requirements for applicants applying to non-Law programmes (Accountancy, Business Management, Economics, Social Science and Information Systems)

•             IELTS : A minimum overall score of 7.0 with reading score of at least 7.0 and writing score of at least 6.5

Minimum Requirements for applicants applying to the Law programme

•             IELTS : A minimum overall score of 7.5 with at least 7.0 each for both reading and writing

The minimum test scores indicated above for law and non-law applicants will be minimally sufficient for applicants to make a competitive application. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee an admission into SMU, as admission is on a highly competitive and selective basis.

•             IELTS/ TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years. For the 2018 admissions exercise, scores from tests taken before 19 March 2016 will not be considered.

Admission Requirements

•             A minimum of 12 years of formal education with good passes in a national/international examination that is recognised for the purpose of admission. Applicants taking their respective high school examinations between January and May must submit/upload online their actual results within 3 working days after the release of the results. If your high school results are not known by the application closing date, please submit your predicted high school scores as attested by your school teacher/counsellor by 31 March . Self-declared predicted scores will not be accepted.

•             One of the following is required : SAT (previously known as SAT I /SAT Reasoning) or ACT (American College Test), including the writing test or IELTS or TOEFL

•             Interview for shortlisted applicants. Law shortlisted applicants must also take a writing test

Law Interview / Writing Tests - Interviews and writing tests for shortlisted Law applicants are conducted in the month of April.

 Business Management Interviews - Shortlisted applicants, including those who are not residing in Singapore, are required to attend face-to-face interviews at SMU campus. As such, under normal circumstances, the Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB) does not conduct telephone/Skype interviews.

Mathematics Requirement

A good number of courses in the Accountancy and Economics programmes are of a highly quantitative nature. As such, applicants are expected to meet additional requirements in the form of a good score in Mathematics at high school level. Applicants who do not have this requirement can still apply for consideration if they have alternative Mathematics content background. The School of Accountancy and School of Economics make the final decision on admission.

  A good Bachelor degree in any field from a recognised university

• A good score in the GMAT or the SMU Admission Test

• Fully proficient in English

 • A good TOEFL/IELTS score (if your degree was not taught in English)

 Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview as part of the admission process.

The SMU Hostel, known as SMU Residences @ Prinsep, is located on Prinsep Street.  Just a 10-minute walk from campus, this hostel is highly sought-after by international students and is located within close proximity to Little India, Bugis Junction and the National Library.

In addition, the hostel is surrounded by museums, theatres, educational institutions, art galleries, cafes, restaurants and a range of retail outlets. Housing a mix of like-minded students from around the world, students will get to experience a taste of diversity and independence. Each apartment has a senior student to assist with any concerns that students may have. In addition, the House Master and the Resident Manager act as guardians and work to create a strong, closeknit family culture.

The residence consists of 3 blocks of 4-storey apartments in a tropical setting with landscaping and abundant foliage. With a total of 48 individual apartments, each has a lounge cum dining area and is fully equipped with refrigerator and microwave oven, toilets and 4 air-conditioned bedrooms, which can accommodate up to 6 residents. All rooms come furnished with all the essentials to make living in Singapore a breeze.

In addition, the university leases rooms from a student hostel at Commonwealth Drive and these are open to 212 full-time SMU students (2nd year and above), exchange students and full-time postgraduate students who plan to study full-time at SMU for the forthcoming academic year. The hostel is located near Holland Village which is known for its cosmopolitan array of restaurants and cafes.

Other Accommodation:

There are other options for accommodation besides living in our hostel. In Singapore, there are  private and public housing. The options are plenty and rents depend on locality and facilities. You will need to engage professional services of property agents to help you with such arrangements. Please note that there will be agent fees when you engage their services.

 

SMU offers a quality undergraduate education that is on par with the world’s best universities at affordable tuition fees. This is possible because the tuition fees are highly subsidised by the Singapore Government in the form of our tuition grant.

Financial aid :  No deserving undergraduate student will be denied an SMU education because of financial difficulty. Students who meet the eligibility requirements will be provided financial aid to help fund their studies at SMU. Different schemes including notebook loans, bursaries, study abroad loans, grants, subsidies and book allowances are available.
