Residential Life

Western Residences offer more than just a place to eat and sleep.

The main campus at The University of Western Ontario offers student housing to first-year and upper-year students in its nine student residences. Medway-Sydenham Hall, Saugeen-Maitland Hall and Delaware Hall are the traditional style residences. Alumni House, Elgin Hall, Essex Hall and London Hall are the suite style residences. Perth Hall and Ontario Hall are the hybrid style residences.

Students can choose from nine residences with three different room styles: traditional-style with single or double rooms; suite-style with single rooms, shared cooking facilities, and a common living area; and hybrid-style with mostly double-room units which have their own washroom.

Residence life engages and connects students to the university community and fosters student growth as leaders. There are ample opportunities for leadership and involvement in a range of activities.

Living on campus puts students at the centre of everything. When students live on campus, they are steps away from class, Western’s many libraries, the state of-the art Western Student Recreation Centre, and the University Community Centre. Bus stops are located close to every residence.

Residence Amenities

·        Fitness and workout rooms, private music practice spaces, and laundry facilities

·        In-building dining halls with a varied six-week menu cycle

·        Main lounges for residence events equipped with Ping-Pong and Pool tables, couches, and large screen TVs

·        Access to 24-hour Front Desk service

·        Regular caretaking from Facilities Management staff

·        Designated study rooms for every floor

Western recognizes the academic achievement of international students through the scholarship programs.

International applicants applying directly from secondary school for admission to Western’s main campus for first year, full-time studies can be considered for Admission Scholarships.

Western Admission Scholarships (These are unlimited in number and are awarded automatically in September to all qualified first year students)

Eligibility for  unlimited Western Admission Scholarships is based on successful completion of the secondary school diploma and on the student’s final admission average, including prerequisite courses, as calculated by Western for the program to which the student has confirmed acceptance. No application is required for consideration.  Western will determine averages for applicants who are not studying in a Canadian secondary school curriculum based on: curriculum, grading practices, and grading scale interpretation.

International President's Entrance Scholarships - 3 at $50,000 ($10,000 annually, plus $10,000 towards first year residence costs)

National Scholarships are designed to recognize all-round excellence. They are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic performance to candidates who demonstrate ability for creative and innovative thought and a passion for the pursuit of learning. National Scholarships also recognize exceptional achievement in extracurricular activities such as the arts and athletics. A special emphasis is placed on a candidate's commitment to community service through ongoing contributions to school and community life.

Other Admission Scholarships for International Students

In addition to the unlimited Western Admission Scholarships listed above, there are admission scholarships available that are specifically for international students beginning full-time first year studies at Western’s main campus.  These other admission scholarships for international students are created by donors and vary in value and criteria.  Please note that these international student scholarships can be awarded in combination with a Western Admission Scholarship or may replace a Western Admission Scholarship.

The following are featured funding opportunities that support international students applying to graduate research degrees at Western.

?             Globalink Research Award - Special Opportunity

?             Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)

?             Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS)

?             Trudeau Doctoral Scholarships

?             Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
