The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university with campuses and facilities in British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1908 ,it is British Columbia's oldest institution of higher learning and has over 60,000 students at its Vancouver and Okanagan Valley campuses.

The institution aims to empower students with technical expertise and an awareness of the latest research trends, enabling them to make a contribution to their chosen field of study.

UBC advances learning and teaching by expanding opportunities outside the classroom. This includes informal educational settings and enriched learning opportunities – co-op placements as well as international and community service learning.

As one of the oldest universities in Canada, the institution faced rapid expansion in the 20th century, and broadened its catalogue of degrees considerably, which had originally concentrated on medicine, theology and law.

Today, the institution can offer around 500 Bachelor's and Master's degrees in subjects such as business and technology management, IT and applied technology, liberal arts and sciences, but also linguistics and translation. Over the years, UBC has launched over 1,300 research projects alongside businesses and fostered the creation of close to 200 new companies.

UBC’s 1501-acre campuses are situated in Downtown Vancouver, a major cultural and economic hub in the region, and Kelowna, a city located in the vicinity of Okanagan Lake in southern British Columbia. Equipped with modern sports centres and with a variety of student clubs operating on campus, students have the chance to participate in a variety of activities from skiing, to aviation, and even archaeology.

The university offers modern facilities including the national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics (TRIUMF), Canada’s second biggest research library holding more than 7 million publications and a traditional Japanese botanical garden, which also serves as home for a Ichibo-a tea house.

A minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component of the academic (NOT general) IELTS test.

Individual graduate programs may require higher English language proficiency scores, and may require minimum scores on individual components of the test. Please check individual program websites to verify English language score requirements.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

?             Graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school: Higher Secondary School Certificate awarded on completion of Standard XII. Certificates must be official. For many new students, living in residence is where the university journey begins. And at UBC, it’s an extraordinary experience unlike any other.

Living in residence makes it easy for students to meet new people, live in a study-oriented atmosphere, get help for academic and personal challenges, and be part of all that UBC and its surrounding neighbourhoods have to offer. Campus residents have easy access to beaches and recreational activities, theatre, restaurants, guest speakers, and special interest clubs.

Year after year, students tell us that living in residence helped them become better learners and make long-lasting friendships. UBC houses more than 11,000 students in 13 residences.

Guaranteed rooms

Many prospective students will qualify for our First Year Guarantee in Winter Session Residence. Most students in this group are assigned to live in Totem Park , Place Vanier or Orchard Commons. They all have furnished shared and single rooms, vibrant common areas for socializing, and plenty of space for quiet study time. Based on availability, some students will be assigned to live in Ritsumeikan-UBC House, Walter Gage, and Fairview Crescent where upper-year students and some graduate students also live.

Students nineteen and older have suite-style residence options on the Point Grey campus. The Gage Towers consist of three 17-floor towers (North, South and East) primarily for second, third, and fourth-year undergraduate students.

The Faculty is home to two internationally recognized residential graduate colleges. These are dedicated to the graduate community, including graduate students, Postdocs and visiting scholars. Additionally, graduate students can apply for UBC Housing or search for accommodation off campus.

These halls include fully furnished kitchens, living areas and bedrooms. Depending on the residence hall, students can choose from a studio or up to a six-bedroom suite. (You will need to bring your own bedding and towels).

Most residence halls are single-gender, however a few co-ed houses are available as well.

Each hall has laundry facilities (operated on a card system), parking and bicycle storage, outdoor facilities such as tennis and basketball courts, and access to Pacific Spirit Regional Park with over 20 miles of multipurpose trails.

Emergency housing assistance is available for students who are experiencing significant difficulties and are unable to locate temporary housing, stay with family or friends, or have another issue making it difficult to source appropriate housing (short or long term).

Off-Campus Accommodations

The local area has a variety of off-campus rental housing options including single homes, duplexes, apartments and rooms for rent. Students wishing to live off-campus need to research availability on their own and should arrive well before the start of term to do so.

Homestay

There are a wide variety of homestay options available, and partners do their best to match students and hosts according to their interests and preferences. Homestay hosts include single people, young couples with children and pets, and older couples. All homestay accommodations have been inspected, and all adults in the home have completed a required criminal reference check.

Scholarships and awards for international students

UBC offers a wide range of funding opportunities for international graduate students.

Most excellent international graduate students will receive funding support of some kind from UBC.

INTERNATIONAL TUITION AWARD

All international students in eligible research-intensive graduate programs at UBC will receive the international tuition award, unless their tuition is paid for by a third-party agency. This scholarship significantly lowers the amount of tuition paid by international students.

OTHER AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Many UBC graduate programs offer graduate support initiative scholarships, stipends, or other awards to outstanding international students. Programs will consider you for such awards or positions when making admissions decisions.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS

These assistantships (also called ras and tas) are part-time jobs with duties related to teaching or conducting research under the supervision of a faculty member.  International students are eligible to apply for these positions through their specific graduate program.

BURSARIES, LOANS AND OTHER NEEDS-BASED FUNDING

International graduate students may be eligible for limited needs-based funding such as emergency bursaries or work-study programs.
