The Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is a New Zealand Government TEI (Polytechnic) located primarily in Palmerston North but has campuses also in Whanganui, Masterton and Auckland.

UCOL campuses are based right where you want them. With three campuses serving the region, the Universal College of Learning or UCOL is a popular choice for students in the lower half of the North .Island. The steadily growing institute of technology and polytechnic has more than 6,000 students working across over 100 programmes, from entry level certificates and foundation courses to diplomas and degrees (which 1/3 of students are doing).

IELTs Entry Requirements

Diploma Level 5: IELTs Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0.

Diploma Level 6: IELTs Academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5.

Degree Level 7: IELTs Academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5.

Postgrad Level 8: IELTs Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0.

Masters Level 9: IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0.

For UCOL Nursing programmes, the English Language Entry Requirements are:

Diploma in Enrolled Nursing: IELTS 6.5 in all bands

Bachelor of Nursing: IELTS 6.5 in all bands

Graduate Diploma in Nursing: IELTS 7.0 in all bands

Short Course in Competency Assessment for Registered Nurses: IELTS 7.0 in all bands

Homestays

Homestay accommodation is where you live with a New Zealand family. You are provided with your own fully furnished room and three meals a day.

Living in a homestay is ideal for international students. It will allow you to concentrate on your studies, learn about New Zealand culture, practice English, and get used to life in New Zealand with the support of a friendly and caring family.

The cost of homestay accommodation is approximately $245 NZD per week. This covers food, electricity, room and Internet.

UCOL can facilitate living in a homestay. There is a one-off placement fee of $230 NZD.

Hostels

There are hostels close to UCOL campuses with furnished rooms, kitchen and laundry facilities, offering both long term and short term accommodation

Shared accommodation - flatting

Students also have the option to go flatting – i.e. renting a house or an apartment with friends. If you choose this type of shared accommodation, we recommend staying for the first four weeks in short term accommodation, as it can take some time to find a suitable place.

UCOL Palmerston North has two types of accommodation. These are homestays, or accommodation @ The Hub

@The Hub Accommodation complex offers apartments and dorms in the centre of town, close to UCOL.

Whanganui UCOL has student accommodation available. The cost is approximately $110.00 (NZ$) per week - this covers everything except telephone, bedding and food. There are plenty of Backpackers and Homestay available in Wairarapa. Accommodation costs approximately $168 per week.
