The University of Otago is a collegiate university located in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. , Founded in 1869, Otago is New Zealand’s first University. It  has earned an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching.

In addition to the main Dunedin campus, the university has small facilities in Auckland and Wellington (based at the Wellington Centre). The medical schools have larger campuses near Christchurch and Wellington Hospitals. Additionally, the university has the Portobello Marine Laboratory inside Otago Harbour.

The university is  strongly committed to international education having collaborative teaching, research and exchange agreements with major institutions around the world. Otago offers a rich cultural life, reflecting a diverse international student community and New Zealand’s own multicultural population.

Otago graduates are sought after and appreciated with many occupying influential positions in industry, government and within their communities across the world.

Located on the edge of the Dunedin Botanic Garden, Otago’s stunning campus offers students an unrivalled campus experience and vibrant cultural life. Situated just a few blocks from the city centre, almost all students live within walking distance of the campus and key facilities. The architectural grandeur and accompanying gardens of Otago University led to it being ranked as one of the world's most beautiful universities by the British publications The Daily Telegraph and The Huffington Post.

Many of the  programmes are the only ones of their kind in New Zealand. Otago is home to the country’s only dental school, the only school of surveying and the country’s only standalone botany programme. It has  the largest science communication programme in the world and the most successful genetics programme in Australasia. The  law school is regarded as one of the best in the country and it  is the oldest and largest medical school in New Zealand.

Otago’s annual Foreign Policy School continues to attract leading national and international speakers. For more than two decades, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs has used the school to train the new cohorts of New Zealand diplomats.

Students at Otago are taught by academic staff who are dedicated to teaching and who are internationally recognised for their research. They are  committed to educate  the next generation of professionals across a wide range of disciplines, and they  are also committed to nurture  the next generation of citizens in New Zealand and other parts of the globe. At Otago you will gain a world-class qualification, and you will also learn other important lessons along the way – lessons that will allow you to thrive in all aspects of your adult life. In addition, you will make friends who you will keep for a lifetime.

Otago is famous for its residential college communities. It has 15 diverse colleges catering mostly for first-year students. The unique collegiate life at Otago is an important part of the experience for many students – the community atmosphere, the support, and the opportunity to discover lifelong friendships all help to make that first year away from home not just easier, but also memorable. All of the colleges are fully catered, warm, student focused and secure. Professional, experienced college leaders and staff take a real interest in the wellbeing of their residents.

International students under the age of 18 when they start studying at the University of Otago can apply to live in Toroa College, Aquinas College or homestay. These options are in accordance with the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.

OTHER ACCOMMODATION

Several of the residential colleges provide accommodation for a number of postgraduate students. The University of Otago has New Zealand’s only residential college – Abbey College – specifically for postgraduate students. This accommodation is located within a few minutes’ walk of all University facilities.

University-managed flats and houses

Students who would like more independence can apply for a room in a University-managed flat. This is also the best option for single semester students. Most of these flats have a New Zealand “Kiwi Host” student. There is a small number of flats available for postgraduate students with partners and/or families, and for unaccompanied postgraduate students wishing to reside in a self-catered flat with other postgraduate students. The flats are fully furnished and within easy walking distance of campus. otago.ac.nz/uniflats.

Flatting is also an important part of university life, offering both responsibility and independence. Dunedin has a wide range of rental accommodation from historic houses to multi-unit, purpose-built complexes.

Many senior students prefer to rent houses or flats near shops or schools. Although there is some accommodation suitable for couples or families close to the campus, affordable accommodation is available in the suburbs, often only a short drive or bus trip from the main campus.

The Student Accommodation Centre can assist you to find rental accommodation and provide helpful hints for flatting life.

Temporary accommodation

We recommend that you book temporary accommodation before you arrive in Dunedin. A list of temporary accommodation can be found on our website: otago.ac.nz/accommodation

International students can apply for more than $15 million worth of scholarships.

The University offers a number of generous masters’ awards and doctoral scholarships (for PhD and other doctoral-level study). These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, research ability (where applicable) and suitability within the department. No interview is required.
