Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is a university in New Zealand, formed on 1 January 2000 when a former technical college (originally established in 1895) was granted university status. It has five faculties across three campuses in Auckland: City, North, and South campuses, and an additional three specialist locations: AUT Millennium, Warkworth Radio Astronomical Observatory and AUT Centre for Refugee Education.

AUT offers a contemporary university education and prepares its students to be successful and to contribute in the changing world.  A beautiful and safe place to live and study, Auckland was ranked third in the world in Mercer’s 2017 Quality of Living index, and among the top 30 cities in the world in the QS Best Student Cities 2017 ranking.

Thanks to its innovative teaching, excellent reputation and focus on real-world experience and work-integrated learning, AUT graduates are highly favoured by employers, with 94% of available graduates in paid employment within six months of graduation.

According to a 2016 survey,  89% of students would recommend the university to others, 87% were satisfied with their campuses, and 83% were satisfied with the quality of teaching.

The university’s three campuses boast world-class facilities, such as the award-winning Sir Paul Reeves Building and MH building, newly opened in 2017. Built using sustainable principles, they feature slick learning areas, auditoriums and research areas.

Living on campus at AUT is a great option, particularly if you're in your first year or from out of town. AUT student accommodation is convenient, modern and supportive - just minutes from the AUT City or North Campus. AUT student accommodation is more than a room – it’s where you'll make friends and settle into university life. AUT’s Residential Services staff run programmes to support you with all aspects of living on campus.

Wellesley Student Apartments offer shared apartment living on AUT's City Campus. It is  self-catered and located in a 13-storey building, housing 502 residents. The apartments are a 5-minute walk to the City Campus.

Akoranga Student Village offers shared apartment living on AUT's North Campus.  It  has 40 townhouse-style, self-catered apartments housing 207 residents.  It  is just a 5 minute walk to AUT North Campus.

External accommodation options for AUT students

Accommodation options close to AUT include apartments, houses, homestays, student accommodation, backpackers and generally involve independent living on your own, with other students or individuals in the workforce.

If you are interested in any of the accommodation options then please contact the accommodation provider directly for information on booking, availability and tenancy costs.

These accommodation options have not been inspected by AUT staff to verify the quality standard, nor are they endorsed by AUT.

We recommend a short-term option such as a backpackers or youth hostel. These give you time to get settled into Auckland while you look for somewhere suitable to live longer term.

Flatting is a good option if you have completed your first year, or wish to live independently. Sharing a flat with a mix of different people is a great way to make new friends.

Most flats are furnished and you just need to bring your personal belongings, and pay for your share of rent, electricity/gas, water, and internet. You might also share the cost of food and groceries.

Long-term accommodation for either a semester or a full academic year is more cost effective while living in Auckland. Expect to pay a bond (typically two-four weeks of rent), and also one week's rent (or more) in advance. The bond is returned to you at the end of your stay as long as the property is in a clean and tidy condition.

A homestay is a great option if you would prefer to experience living in a Kiwi household with a family.

Renting your own private apartment or house is suitable for students who want to live on their own, or for postgraduate students who need accommodation that is suitable for a family.
