RMIT University (officially the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, informally RMIT) is an Australian public research university located in Melbourne, Victoria.

In addition to its City campus, it has two radial campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area which are located in the northern suburbs of Brunswick and Bundoora. It also maintains a training site in the western suburb of Point Cook located on the Royal Australian Air Force base Williams, and a research site in the Southern Grampians region located in the rural city of Hamilton.

Outside of Australia, it has a presence in Asia and Europe. In Asia, it has two branch campuses in Vietnam which are located in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and maintains teaching partnerships in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. In Europe, it has a coordinating centre in Spain located in Barcelona.

It is a global university of technology and design offering a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational degrees and diplomas. It  has an international reputation for excellence in professional and vocational educational, applied and innovative research, and engagement with the needs of industry. RMIT programs are global in focus and practical in application.

The Melbourne city campus combines modern architecture with historic buildings, including a former magistrates’ court, Old Melbourne Gaol and the Capitol Theatre, and during graduation time RMIT students parade through the city’s streets in their academic gowns.

RMIT, which is Australia's largest tertiary institution, instructs more than 30,000 students, a quarter of whom are from overseas. There are courses in 23 schools across three academic colleges; the College of Design and Social Context, the College of Business, and the College of Science, Engineering and Health. RMIT has semester exchanges programmes involving more than 150 partner institutions in 31 cities on three continents.

RMIT’s Student Support Advisors can help you to find short-term or temporary accommodation for when you first arrive as well as somwhere to live long term. They can help you whether you are coming alone or are going to be living with your family.

They can help you decide which suburb you want to live in, find affordable, safe and appropriate housing, and provide information about renting and tenancy agreements.

When choosing accommodation, you will need to consider travel time and transport to campus. Discover the closest suburbs to your campus and the transport available to you to get to university.

Long term accommodation

When choosing long term accommodation consider your requirements and proximity to campus.

1.      Living on campus

Living on campus means your classes are just a short walk away. You will also be near all the facilities.

On-campus living means you’ll also have great access to student support services, for any queries about student life or study that you might have.

RMIT’s Bundoora campus is a vibrant centre of learning located 18 kilometres from Melbourne’s City Centre. The campus is very close to tram and bus services and plenty of parking is available.

The University Hill shopping precinct is right opposite the campus and also has community and medical facilities for your convenience.

2.      Homestay

Homestay or “full board” accommodation is is a good choice if you want to experience living in an Australian home, reduce set-up costs and improve your English.

Families (or sometimes a couple or single person) offer you a room in their home as well as all your meals. All homestay accommodation for international students is thoroughly screened to ensure it is a suitable living environment for students.

3.      Student hostels

Student hostels are a popular accommodation option for interstate and international students because they are usually located near to campuses and offer a social atmosphere through organised social activities for residents.

Some hostels offer meal plans, others provide kitchen facilities for self-catering. Communal areas commonly include lounge, bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities. Utilities such as gas and electricity are often included in the overall cost.

4.      Student apartments

Living in student accommodation gives you security and your family back home peace of mind. Student apartments can also reduce travel costs and are a great way to meet other students.

RMIT Village

RMIT Village is a five-minute tram ride from the city campus and offers a great student community. It includes internet access, fully furnished apartments, outdoor heated pool, on-site gym, and a lounge and courtyard area.

UniLodge

UniLodge properties in Melbourne’s central business district are safe and friendly. Accommodation is in central and convenient locations close to RMIT, with public transport, shops and cafés on your doorstep.

UniLodge @ RMIT Bundoora offers 370 beds for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The accommodation is first class and there are a variety of studio apartments to choose from as well as large two, three and four bedroom shared apartments.

More student apartments are listed on the RMIT students website.

5.      Shared or private rental

You can rent or ‘lease’ a property by yourself or share with friends. This can be organised through a real estate agent or directly through a landlord. The benefit of shared accommodation is reduced living and set-up expenses. It is also a great way to make new friends and is the most popular accommodation choice for Australian students.

Temporary accommodation options

Temporary or short term accommodation provides a place to stay while you become familiar with Melbourne and look for a permanent place to live.

•             RMIT University Housing for Students

•             Space hotel

•             Unilodge

•             Melbourne shortstay apartments

•             OnlyMelbourne.com.au (lists other options such as hostels, guest houses, serviced apartments).

Budget accommodation

Hostels offer cheap, short term accommodation. Most have a mix of private rooms and dormitory style accommodation.

RMIT offers a range of scholarships to commencing international students across all fields of study.

Scholarships can help with all kinds of study costs such as textbooks, fees, accommodation and living expenses.

While many of the scholarships consider academic achievement, there are also scholarships awarded based on what you are studying, where you are from or your personal circumstances.
