The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is a public research university primarily located in Tasmania, Australia. It is Australia’s fourth oldest university.

With more than 34,000 students, the University provides a creative and stimulating academic environment and vibrant campus life. While maintaining a distinctive Tasmanian identity, it  offers a truly internationalized curriculum and broad access to a diverse range of degrees, student exchanges and learning experiences to shape future global leaders.

Tasmania is uniquely placed to offer a true Australian experience. The state is an overwhelmingly English-speaking environment and has a traditional Australian culture, all in a stunning and fun-packed location. Less than two hours from Sydney and less than one hour from Melbourne, Tasmania is known for its friendly, welcoming people, pleasant temperate climate, easy access to wilderness and heritage, and a cosmopolitan lifestyle with a strong arts culture.

The two international University of Tasmania campuses in Hobart and Launceston are large enough to offer you a vibrant and unique learning environment with world-class facilities, but still small enough to ensure friendly connections between staff and students, and a strong focus on the needs of the individual.

The University of Tasmania is very highly regarded for its commitment to excellence in learning and teaching. The University offers more than 100 undergraduate (bachelor) degrees, and more than 150 postgraduate programs from Graduate Certificates through to Masters and research programs.

We understand that finding the right accommodation is really important when you're moving to a new country to study. There is a wide range of accommodation options on and off campus, including university and private sector accommodation. They each offer different opportunities to meet new friends, meet locals and find your own personal space to study and relax. Check out your options and choose the one that's right for you.

Arranging accommodation

You need to make your own arrangements for accommodation and ensure you have somewhere to stay for when you first arrive in Tasmania.

If you want to apply for on-campus accommodation you should apply as early as possible — at least three months before you arrive.

If you are interested in shared or private rental housing it is usually better to wait until you arrive in Tasmania but at the same time have some temporary accommodation arranged for your arrival.

Some temporary accommodation options are listed on the airport pickup form and the Discover Tasmania website.

University student accommodation

The University provides on-campus and off-campus student accommodation in Hobart and Launceston through Accommodation Services.

Whether you’re studying in Hobart or Launceston, there are a variety of on-campus and off-campus accommodation options to choose from. Most consist of single rooms with shared facilities, as well as six-bedroom apartments and a limited number of one and two-bedroom flats. In 2016, weekly rates ranged from $146 to $213 for on-campus accommodation and $146 to $181 for off-campus accommodation.

For more information and up to date rates, visit Accommodation Services.

Affiliated with the University though not run by Accommodation Services and fully independent is the Oxbridge-style residential college, Jane Franklin Hall. Jane Franklin is located midway between the Sandy Bay and Hobart CBD campuses. Visit lJane Franklin Hall for more information.

Home Stay

With homestay accommodation in both Hobart and Launceston you live with an Australian host so you can practice your English and learn more about Australian culture in a safe, caring and rewarding environment.

Please note that all students aged under 18 studying in Launceston are always placed in approved homestay accommodation.

Under-18 Accommodation

If you are under 18 and studying at the University of Tasmania, you must have approved accommodation/welfare arrangements.

If you are under 18 and will be studying in Launceston, you can stay in homestay accommodation. Please refer to the homestay information in this section.

If you’re under 18 years of age and will be studying in Hobart, you can live in homestay or at Springvale Hostel.

Springvale provides top quality accommodation for international high school, college and university students and a safe, fun learning environment.

Shared rental accommodation

Sharing a rental house off-campus with other students is a popular option for many university students. Shared rental accommodation is advertised on noticeboards around the university (especially the Tasmanian University Union Building), and also on websites such as flatmates.com.au.

The following suburbs are generally close to our campuses with ready access to transport which you might wish to consider as starting points —

Hobart and Sandy Bay campuses

Battery Point

Dynnyrne

Hobart CBD

Sandy Bay

North Hobart

South Hobart

West Hobart

Newnham and Inveresk campuses

Invermay

Mowbray

Private rental housing

If you’re coming with your family, your own rental property is a good option. Private rentals are advertised by local estate agents or online at realestate.com.au/rent.

Want more information?

If you have any further accommodation questions you can contact Accommodation Services at enquiries@accommodation.utas.edu.au.
