Choosing your accommodation is an important step in your transition and we recommend that you start looking at your accommodation options as early as possible, particularly if you want to apply for on-campus accommodation.

There are many things you should think about before making a decision.

La Trobe students benefit from a wide variety of accommodation offerings, including affordable, university-managed accommodation. This is more than just a place to live – it’s a life-changing experience.

If living on campus is not for you, we can support you with finding off-campus accommodation. We can also provide options for students with families, visiting staff and conference groups

On-campus accommodation

We have a range of accommodation options at our campuses in Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga and at our Melbourne Campus in Bundoora, including oncampus undergraduate residences, on-campus postgraduate and matureaged residences, and family unit accommodation.

Life in residence gives students a unique opportunity for intellectual, social and personal development in a safe and dynamic residential community.

Residents on campus share a unique relationship with other students and dedicated staff, which supports and enhances their student experience.

For more information about living on campus visit: locations

Off-campus accommodation

When you start looking for off-campus accommodation, there are a range of available housing options. Each choice offers different benefits and costs. Your choice of accommodation may depend on the location you want to live in, the condition and facilities in the property, whether you prefer a quiet or busy social house and your budget.

Share housing

Sharing a rented house or flat with other people is generally the most economical, flexible and popular form of off-campus accommodation.

You can move into an existing shared house, or organise a group to establish a new shared house.

Hostels and rooming houses

If you live in a house or property where there’s one or more rooms available for rent and the total number of people occupying these rooms are four or more, it may be classified as a rooming house. Bedrooms are usually furnished and you can rent your own locked bedroom (single room) or share a bedroom with others (dorm room).

You also share common facilities such as the kitchen, laundry, bathroom and living areas.

Rooming houses are a good option if you enjoy living in a communal environment.

Private rental vacancies

This option includes units, flats, houses, self-contained bungalows and apartments.

Living in a private rental gives you the opportunity to live independently and be responsible for all aspects of your tenancy.

This can be one of the more expensive options as you are solely responsible for meeting costs such as the bond (security deposit), rent in advance, gas, electricity and water, moving expenses and furnishings.

 Commercially operated student apartments

If you’re interested in living independently in a larger complex, with less pastoral support but with access to common facilities, this may be a good choice.

Rooms come fully furnished and you have your own bathroom and kitchen facilities.

There are different types of accommodation within apartments, including: – studio room – one bedroom – two bedroom – twin share (sharing your room with another person).

Homestay is not provided by La Trobe University but the Australian Homestay Network. (AHN) is Australia's leading homestay organisation and has set new standards in delivering successful homestay accommodation for international students commencing their studies in Australia.

In a homestay arrangement, you live as a guest with the host family in their home.

Meals and other support may be provided and your room is usually fully furnished.

This can be appealing as it gives you an opportunity to be supported in a family environment.
