James Cook University (JCU) is a public university and is the second oldest university in Queensland, Australia. JCU is a teaching and research institution. The University's main campuses are located in the tropical cities of Cairns, Singapore and Townsville. JCU also has study centres in Mount Isa, Mackay and Thursday Island. A Brisbane campus, operated by Russo Higher Education, delivers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to international students. The University’s main fields of research include marine sciences, biodiversity, sustainable management of tropical ecosystems, genetics and genomics, tropical health care, tourism and engineering.

JCU recognises that knowledge has the power to change lives and strives to create a student centred learning environment where students learn to take full advantage of their university experience. With friendly campuses, smaller class sizes, accessible teaching staff, and excellent support services including study skills and student mentor programs,  students receive the personal attention they need to achieve their best.

Significant for JCU students in Australia is the university’s unique natural location. Visitors and  residents enjoy a huge range of leisure activities including diving on the Great Barrier Reef, visiting the ancient rainforests and waterfalls in the many national parks, bushwalking, camping, fishing and visiting historic outback regions or the picturesque farming villages of the Atherton Tablelands. Students at the Brisbane campus will experience one of Australia’s most liveable cities and have easy access to the coastal regions of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. At JCU’s Singapore campus, students will experience quality Australian education in a dynamic yet safe Asian metropolis.

JCU engages with all its communities, businesses and industry to promote a sustainable region that is socially inclusive. There are specialist centres and institutes based at JCU that serve as hubs for research and innovation. Infrastructure such as  Orpheus Island Research Station and the Daintree Rainforest Observatory add to the quality of the learning and research experience.

If your native language is not English you are required to demonstrate your English language proficiency by undertaking a test such as Academic IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson (PTE Academic). Other English language tests may be accepted. If you have successfully completed two years of full-time study in which the language of instruction and assessment was English, this may also satisfy the English requirement.

If your English language proficiency test score does not meet the requirements of entry into your chosen course, then there are other options available.

Many students who meet the academic entry requirements for entry into a JCU degree, but not the English language entry requirements, receive a ‘packaged offer’ consisting of a period of academic English language studies, plus an offer into a JCU course. Please note, some courses may require an IELTS test after completion of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program and this condition will be stipulated in your Offer letter if it is an entry requirement.

English Language Tests Minimum Scores

IELTS   The  score  should not be less than 6.0 with the minimum score of 6.0 required in each. Different courses require score with minimum score 6.0 to 7.0 and not less than 6.0 in any component .

Under graduate courses

Require minimum 60% in their X11 exams. Scores calculated on a percentage of the best 4 academic subjects in either the All Indian School Boards or State Boards.

 Postgraduate course

•        a degree equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree. Other requirements and factors may also be taken into consideration such as work history and research experience at time of assessment.

•        Please refer to the university website for details as requirements vary from course to course.

PhD course

•        To apply for a PhD program in an Australian university, a student needs to have completed a 3-4 year minimum graduation degree, along with a 2 years master program. The student also needs to have a high English Language proficiency score. To apply for the course, the student also needs to submit his reference letters, research proposal, synopsis, etc. for which, if accepted, they receive a letter of proposal approval from the university.
