The university  was founded on the principle of giving everyone the opportunity to realise their potential through education and still holds that belief just as strongly today. Leadership has always been at the core of their values. It is one of the first universities in the world to admit students solely on academic merit, and to open its doors to women on the same basis as men. The aim is to make lives better not just by producing leaders of society, but through equipping  people with the qualities that allow them to serve all of their communities at every level. Today, the University provides almost $100 million in scholarships, grants and other support, as well as alternative entry pathways to students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds every year.

Its research also includes a distinctive whole-of-institution focus on China and Southeast Asia.

The University’s strategy represents almost $1 billion of targeted investment for interdisciplinary research in these areas alone, which places it among the leading institutions globally pursuing these challenges.

The University is located in Sydney, Australia’s most dynamic, exciting and culturally diverse city. Sydney ranked number one in Australia and number four worldwide in the QS Best Student City list. English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you need to demonstrate that your English language skills meet the minimum level required for your chosen course. You can do this by fulfilling one of the following: 1. For undergraduate study: a recognised senior secondary (high school) qualification conducted in English, English subjects in secondary qualifications specified by the University or tertiary studies (at least one year of full-time university study) in English at a recognised institution.

 2. For postgraduate study, show that you have successfully completed tertiary studies in which the language of the institution and of instruction, examination and assessment was English. You need to have started these tertiary studies no more than five years before the date of application.

 3. Complete an accepted English proficiency test with results that meet the minimum entry requirements for your course. English language test scores are valid for two years.

Accepted tests are the: −

IELTS (International English Language Testing System

TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language: internet based)

− Pearsons Test of English (PTE)

− TOEFL PB (Test of English as a Foreign Language: paper based)

− Cambridge English Scale – from 2015 for Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)

4. Complete an approved English course at the University of Sydney Centre for English Teaching (CET), with results that meet the minimum entry requirements for your course.

IELTS The  score  should not be less than 6.5 with the minimum score of 6.0 required in each component (L for Listening, R for Reading, S for Speaking and W for Writing )

Admission to the University of Sydney is highly competitive. You need to meet specific academic and English language requirements before we can make an unconditional offer of admission to you. Some courses also have prerequisites and assumed knowledge.. For some courses, including medicine, music, oral health, visual arts and veterinary science, there may be additional selection criteria, such as an interview, portfolio or performance.. Before you apply, check the website for important document submission guidelines that apply to all applications and supplementary forms that may be required for some courses. − sydney.edu.au/study/how-to-apply

Undergraduate Applicants are required to meet course-specific academic requirements through one of the following: −

 - an accepted senior secondary qualification

− at least one year of tertiary study in a bachelor’s degree at a recognised tertiary institution

− an equivalent tertiary qualification accepted by the University

− a recognised university foundation program, such as the University of Sydney Foundation Program.

Some courses have additional selection criteria such as interviews, auditions, portfolios and admission tests.

Postgraduate coursework

You need to meet the minimum eligibility criteria. This may include an acceptable academic qualification (usually the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree) and compliance with any special entry requirements for your course.

•             Almost all Australian Universities accept the 3-year graduation system for entry into most postgraduate courses. For instance, Indian bachelor degree like B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. (ordinary) is equivalent to an Australian Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

•             However, some courses and universities may require a qualification equivalent to Australian Bachelor (Honours) Degree, which requires either a honors graduation degree like B.A. (H), B. Com (H) etc or 16 years of formal education, which would mean another year after graduation or a four year degree course like B.E., B. Tech and other such courses.

•             For most Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.

If your qualification isn’t recognised, you can complete a university preparation course through the University of Sydney Foundation Program.

RESEARCH

In general, to be eligible for admission to a postgraduate research degree, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability, such as: −

a bachelor’s degree with first or upper second class honours, or

− a master’s degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of original research, or

− an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. The above criteria are the minimum requirements for eligibility and do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the faculty.

The University of Sydney is one of the world’s most beautiful universities. The  Camperdown/ Darlington Campus is close to the central business district and some of the city’s famous beaches. Living on or close to campus can enhance your university experience as you’ll find it easier to immerse yourself in all the possibilities of the student lifestyle. You can get involved in activities inside and outside the classroom, make new friends and gain invaluable life experience.

Choosing where to live may be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when starting university. The cost and availability of accommodation in Australia depends on the type you choose. For instance, on-campus accommodation is very popular and requires students to apply for a room well in advance, whereas rental accommodation tends to be more readily available and can often be organised when you arrive. You will also find that costs and availability vary between states and territories, as well as between metropolitan and regional areas.

Prior to your arrival in Australia, it is important to contact your education institution’s accommodation service and ask about what is available and the costs involved. They can advise you on where to live, how much it’s likely to cost, and how to find and secure a place. They  can also give you advice about independently-run student housing, such as Sydney University Village, Urbanest, Stucco Student Cooperative Living and the eight affiliated residential colleges.

Each accommodation provider has its own application procedures, dates and requirements. It is better for you to start the process as early as possible, as admission can be highly competitive. This service may also be able to arrange temporary accommodation for students when they first arrive in Australia. Students can contact their institution’s accommodation service before their arrival in Australia to arrange this.

There are various options available beside on campus accommodation and residential colleges. You can choose private rental houses or can either opt for home stay with a family nearby. You can look for accommodation that suits your needs and budget.

All University residence halls and affiliated residential colleges are open to domestic and international applicants of all cultural and religious backgrounds, and at any level: undergraduate or postgraduate.

Some colleges are gender-specific. The Women’s College is open to women only.

At undergraduate level, St Paul’s College offers places to men only, and Sancta Sophia College to women only. Both are open to postgraduate men and women.

The University of Sydney has many scholarships available for international students. There are also scholarships that are funded by the government and various industries.

1. Dr Abdul Kalam International Scholarships –The faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies at the University offers the Dr Abdul Kalam International Undergraduate Tuition Fee Scholarships. He was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Sydney in May 2011.

2. ACER International Student Scholarship – Business (AISS) – This is a tuition fee scholarship given to the students enrolling for Undergraduate Business program.

 6 .Vice-Chancellor International Scholarships Scheme

Many students apply for a scholarship and a place in a research degree at the same time. Research Training Program International Scholarships, funded by the Australian Government, cover tuition fees, Overseas Student Health Cover, relocation costs and a living allowance to high-achieving international postgraduate research students. Additionally, our international scholarships allow high-achieving students to undertake research projects at the University. They cover tuition fees, Overseas Health Cover and relocation costs and provide a living allowance for up to three years, with the possibility of an extension up to six months for PhD students.
