A small number of scholarships for overseas students are available from the universities and colleges. These are awarded solely at the discretion of the individual institutions who set down their own criteria for eligibility. Students are advised to contact the institution of their choice directly, to obtain information.

Ireland Homecoming Study Programme

The IHSP aims to encourage the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Irish nationals, and non-resident passport holders living outside the European Union to return to Ireland for their higher education studies for more information about this scholarship

University of Limerick

As a part of its commitment to promoting excellence in research, the University of Limerick has decided to make available eight non-EU fee scholarships which will be allocated by the Graduate School in support of research postgraduate students for more information

Cork Institute of Technology

Cork Institute of Technology offers a €1,000 scholarship by way of discount on first year undergraduate fees to high-achieving applicants. In addition, CIT offers paid research positions to postgraduate researchers in areas where external funding has been won for specific purposes.   • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invites applications for research grants in Biodiversity, Water, Forests and Water, Soils, Climate Change, Infrastructure, Developing Environmental Research Potential, ERC Fellowships, SKEP - Sustainable Consumption and Production.
  • Ireland Canada University Foundation, These awards are designed principally for young scholars and academics who are currently engaged at graduate level research in a discipline which is, or has potential to be, related to both Ireland and Canada, or who are commencing such research. All academic disciplines are eligible. The ICUF Scholarships are for short visits which are to benefit the scholar's research, to establish new academic contacts in the other country, and which will provide the opportunity for the development of ongoing links in that research area.

  • The Ireland Funds: The mission of The Ireland Funds is to be the largest worldwide network of people of Irish ancestry and friends of Ireland dedicated to raising funds to support programs of peace and reconciliation, arts and culture, education and community development
  • The Ulysses Programme: The IRCSET and the IRCHSS, in partnership with gide and Teagasc, launched the 2009 Ulysses programme for research visits between Ireland and France. The programme offers grants of up to €2,500 to Irish and French researchers to support visits linked to mutual research projects. The Ulysses programme facilitates the exchange of innovative ideas and approaches between Irish and French researchers and the development of mutual research projects by supporting Irish researchers visiting France and reciprocal visits by French researchers to Ireland. The programme also provides for the organisation of research workshops which bring together researchers from France and Ireland for the purpose of establishing research networks.
  • World Bank: The programme awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries.
  • The Royal Irish Academy: The Academy awards approximately sixty research grants each year in both the humanities and the natural science.

China Scholarship Council: The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is a non-profit institution affiliated with the Ministry of Education. The objective of the CSC is to provide financial assistance to the Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad and to the foreign citizens wishing to study in China in order to develop the educational, scientific and technological, and cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation between China and other countries, to strengthen the friendship and understanding between Chinese people and the people of all other countries, and to promote world peace and the socialist modernization drive in China.

Additional Funding Links for Japanese Students:
Canon Foundation Scholarships: The Canon Foundation in Europe grants up to 15 Research Fellowships annually to highly qualified European and Japanese researchers. The Fellowships are awarded for periods of a minimum three months and maximum of one year. Applications for Research Fellowships in all fields of research are welcome. The aim of the Foundation is to contribute to international understanding, in particular between Europe and Japan. Candidates should hold a doctorate or at least a Master's degree. They are eligible during the ten-year period following the successful completion of their Ph.D or MA degree.

  • The Gilman Scholarship Programme for American Students
  • The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is a national scholarship program named for the celebrated politician who was instrumental in bringing Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland into some semblance of peaceful accord. The scholarship program awards twelve students with a full-year scholarship for studies at a college or university in Ireland. The goal of the programme is to encourage next gen decision makers and political leaders. Because of the visibility of these awards they are extremely competitive. Selection criteria may change from year to year as well as funding. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community.
